Scripture Reading
2 Peter 1:5-7
5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control...
1 Peter 5:6-11
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Devotional Content:

As Joshua prepared to lead Israel over the Jordan river to conquer Jericho, he commands the people to "consecrate themselves (Joshua 3:5)." To consecrate means to be set apart as Holy. It literally means to choose a Godly standard. Often we will ask God to move in our lives in miraculous ways. We will ask Him to use us, to bless us, and/or enlarge us. We ask these things without realizing the personal responsibility we have to set ourselves apart in view of what we are believing God to do.

Jeremiah declares that the mind of God is filled with plans to prosper you, yet, the release of those plans, according to Deuteronomy 28, are often contingent on your ability to obey what He has asked of you. This is important because it illustrates the intentionality and purpose believers must have to live according to God's standard. Though this may seem as a daunting task, you must constantly reaffirm in yourself that you are well able to be holy as God has called you to be holy. Please understand that God will never give you a command that He has not empowered you to walk in. Thus, when God commands us to "be holy", we can be assured with that command we were also given the grace to do so.

One scheme the enemy consistently tries to use to destroy you is to try to convince you that you are "only human," and that because of this fact, some things are just out of your control. He wants you to believe that compromise of God's standard is natural to who you are, but this line of thinking is totally contrary to God's Word. Your humanness IS NOT weak. It is strong in the LORD and in the power of His might. You have been given a divine nature that is fully sufficient for all things pertaining to a godly life. God has imparted into you a Spirit that is fully powerful, fully stabilized in God's love, and fully capable of controlling yourself (2 Timothy 1:7).

"No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man.

God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability,

but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape,

that you may be able to endure it."

1 Corinthians 10:13

As you go through your day, know that you don't have to yield to any weakness. You have been given power to escape and endure every temptation! When Paul prays for God to remove a reoccurring weakness, God responds with "My grace is sufficient." Grace is God's unmerited favor to win. This is powerful because it challenges you to understand that what has been placed in you through His Spirit is enough for you win in every situation. It is not too hard for you to live life under control and in line with God's standard. Nothing you face is greater than The Power working within you. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead has taken residence in your heart. You are fully capable of humbling yourself under God's mighty hand. You simply have to choose to do so!

Have an Impactful Day!

Today’s Challenge:

  1. What compromise have you allowed to continue in your life due to not believing you have the strength to overcome it?

  2. What boundaries and safeguards will you implement today to ensure that you don't fall to this temptation?

  3. Who in your life are you able to share your weakness for accountability and support?

LORD, Thank You for the grace to operate with a Spirit of self-control. I choose to humble myself under Your authority. Help me to honor You in all I do so that I may remain set apart for Your use and favor. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
